A tribute to the first American Champion Long Haired Dachshund imported into Australia.

The late Rhonda Phillips of Lohengrin Kennels had long thought about importing Standard Long Haired bloodlines from the USA. On an earlier visit she actually paid a deposit on a puppy that the breeder later withdrew from sale and who went on to a successful show career.

In 1990 Alan & Judy Poulton were visiting the USA where Alan judged several hound breeds including Dachshunds and the Group at the Ventura County show in California. The stunning young Best of Variety Long Haired, Am Ch Bermargs Shoney of Boondox who was subsequently awarded Group 1 was the best Long Haired Dachshund he'd ever seen according to Alan at the completion of his judging assignment. Thus began a lasting friendship with Shoney's owner, Barbara Powers and the Poultons.

Travelling on to the Beverly Hills Kennel Club show the following day the Poultons witnessed Shoney awarded a Hound Group placing then on to the Knickerbocker Dachshund Club show in New York a week later they cheered him to his Best in Show win followed by his Hound Group placing at Westminster a few days later handled by the late great Michael Zollo.

Needless to say on returning to Australia armed with photos of this outstanding dog Rhonda and Judy began the long campaign to find, if possible, a Shoney son with an impeccable bitch line to cross with Rhonda's established UK bloodlines. It was a tall order and they only wanted the best. It was Shoney's owner, Barbara Powers, who finally set up the connection with Dan Harrison of Boondox Kennels in Indiana. Dan had a young dog that he was campaigning which he offered to Rhonda and Judy on completion of his USA title and so they became joint owners of Am Ch Boondox Jumping Jack Flash. It took nine long months for 'Jay Jay'
to reach our shores due to the then quarantine regulations which required dogs from mainland USA to spend 5 months in Honolulu and four months quarantine in Australia. The Poultons were fortunate to have had friends in Honolulu who were entrusted with his care.

'Jay Jay' was a Shoney son and a grandson of Am Ch Boondox Panama Jack one of the great producers of his time. Panama Jack sired in excess of 100 show champions, three of his sons placing in the Hound Group at Westminster on different occasions and he was the Dachshund Club of America's top producer in 1988, '89 and '90. The combination of Panama Jack and the solid bloodlines of Dee Hutchinson's Rose Farm kennels was exactly what was needed to renew the hybrid vigour and temperament in the Long Haired variety in Australia.

Among the Australian breeders who used 'Jay Jay' with success have been Moira Sherwood (Imlay) Eric Soti & Wolfgang Schnitzer (Keaton) and the Poultons (Laurieton) these kennels producing Specialty Best in Show winners. The union of 'Jay Jay' to Lohengrin Flame, best in show winner at the first National Dachshund Specialty, resulted in a spectacular litter for Keaton Kennels. Grand Ch Keaton Jaks, in his illustrious show career, won two National Specialty Best in Shows and a Runner-Up making him 'Jay Jay's most outstanding son. Jaks litter sister Ch Keaton Flamboyant won Best in Show at the 3rd National Specialty in 1994.

The 3rd National Specialty in Brisbane was a tribute to 'Jay Jay' as a sire with his progeny winning 5 classes, 8 class placegetters, Challenge Dog, Reserve Challenge Dog, Bitch Challenge and Best in Show from an entry of 59 Long Hairs. This was one of the greatest displays of his value as a sire and unfortunately Rhonda did not live to see this result.

'Jay Jay's bloodlines fitted in especially well with progeny by Avril Varley's UK import, Ch Swansford Mancinci of Murrumbidgee. 'Jay Jay' sired over 25 show champions before his loss to the variety in a tragic accident which never saw him mated to any of his grand daughters. His memory will live on in Australian Dachshund history as one of the great imports.
